Abstract
Purpose: To determine whether the human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype is predictive of residual or recurrent high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 2-3) following a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP)

Materials and Methods : Between March 2006 and February 2009, 95 patients with CIN2 -3 were treated by a LEEP and followed up with cytology and the HPV DNA test at postoperatively 6, 12, 24th months.

Results: A total of 5 patients had a positive test for the same high risk (HR)-HPV genotype before and after the LEEP, 3 patients who were positive for HPV-16 positive developed recurrence, but a positive test for HPV-58, 52 did not. In a total of 13 patients who had a positive test for other HPV genotype no residual/recurrence occurred.

Conclusion: Persistent infection with the same HPV genotype, especially HPV-16 should be considered a risk factor for developing residual/recurrent CIN2-3
